Affinity Turns 18: A Celebration of Growth, Gratitude, and the Everlasting Fascination with Gymnastics

This week, Affinity celebrates its 18th birthday! We’re a whole ‘grown up’ person old. Wow.

I remember teaching those first classes at Sheredes Primary. Dreaming of creating our own space where people could experience what was beneficial to them through gymnastics.

One of Affinity's First Newsletters - 2007

That dream has been well realised over the years and yet still continues to develop into more.

But why is that?! On reflection, I think it’s down to how much gymnastics (and it’s related sports) still teaches me – both about the sport itself and the people who practice it.

Open Gym - circa 2011

Gymnastics is a perfect blend of science and art. Where physics meets creativity and each person brings their own unique expression to its practice. Our sport bends and shifts, allowing for endless variations, never one size fits all but equally fitting for each in their own ways.

And you can’t effectively learn it, without also learning about yourself in the process.

I can also say much the same about being in business!

It’s been and continues to be a journey of growth and gratitude. ‘Never a dull day’ is one of our favourite phrases! I tried to work out how many people we’ve taught over the years… i think it’s somewhere between 5-10 thousand. From children taking their first steps on the mat to adults rediscovering their strength and balance. Every coach, every student, every parent who’s been part of this journey – thank you.

Early Parkour Fun - 2017

Here’s to 18 incredible years, and many more to come!

If you’d like to be a part of it, we’d love to have you. We teach gymnastics, cheerleading and parkour – check out the timetable here and fill in the join us form to get booked in.
